My experience had the threaded connector come off with the top hat - of course its now obvious that's not always so! The portion of the threaded connector in the base is short compared to the section that threads into the hat.
If only the hat comes off look closely at the exposed threaded connector. On mine it will accept a 1/8" hex key which makes removal quite easy.
