2 channel is great when you are multi-tasking and for critical listening.
Multichannel with classical/chamber music SACD's (recorded well) bring it to another level.
It brings the entire ambiance/depth and late sounds of a venue, that 2 speakers cannot provide.
The center adds another dimension and full size center speaker is best, but its hard to use in most systems.
Not so sure about Rock, as a guitar here, then over there in another speaker, is kind of gimmicky on some CD's over the long hall.
But some are done very well.
A rock music example, not mentioned much, is the Doors 5.1.
It was not over done, when made.
