Dan.......I have always appreciated the combination of tubes and solid state together. I run a solid state preamp with mono tube power amps in the studio system (C1000C/P + MC2301's), and run a tube preamplifier with solid state power amp in the living room system (C2300 + MC452). The special organic nature to the sound tubes impart, the even order harmonics, blend well with the tighter, more dynamic sound Jerome mentions with solid state components. It is my opinion the combination of tubes and solid state working together offer a synergistic and complimentary presentation.

The McIntosh C22 reissue is a gorgeous preamplifier. The cosmetics and control features pay homage to the classic original C22 but the internal parts and circuit design is essentially a C2300 preamplifier with slight variations. I think the C22 reissue will be a fine mate to your new Bryston 4B³ solid state power amplifier. I also agree with the idea of keep the DAC external. This allows future options as DAC technology advances without having to bail out of an excellent preamp just to remain current with digital improvements. In my opinion, the C22 preamplifier with retro styling and modern performance is the way to go over the C47. It's also nice to see The Absolute Sound recognized the McIntosh C22 with a 2017 Editors' Choice Award.
