Here's why airfares to Hawaii could get cheaper
Both the airplane (airframe and engines) and the airline have to be certified for Extended Operations (ETOPS) to fly twin engine aircraft to Hawaii from the West Coast. This is a very stringent certification process. SW will probably do it for some portion of their fleet.
ETOPS also stands for "Engines Turn Or Passengers Swim"
Aviation has a perfect record - we've never left one up there yet!

I too am confused as to why Southwest's 737 fleet were unable to reach Hawaii from the West Coast. They fly to LAX and SFO, among others. I took a United 737 flight from SFO to OGG back in August.
Anyway, I hope the increased competition really does lower airfare to Hawaii. I intend to visit often for the rest of my life!
