You have to have the motor built into the lens like an AF-S lens. This may or may not pose some problems.

True, but I believe all of the DX lenses are AF-S, and certainly the ones that come in the kits are. Since he said it would be his first SLR, it should be easy to make sure that any lens he gets is AF-S.
Another difference with the D-40 and D-60 is that they use SD memory cards instead of compact flash cards. The SD cards are smaller, lighter, and cheaper, but may not be as robust as the compact flash cards the D-300 uses.
