I have the D300 as well.
You can pick one up for under $1700 and get yourself a bunch of cool lenses to have fun with with the extra money you'll save over the more expensive cameras.
If you're not a real pro, some of the features on the pricier bodies will be useless to regular guys like me (and maybe you as well).
The D300 has enough stuff to keep you interested and take some amazing pix.
