The result is dependent on the
proper mid-bass coupling between the two speakers. Step 1 is simply
about the bass as evaluated by the position of the left speaker. Step 2 couples the right speaker to the room and to the left
in the bass. Step 3 addresses distance apart and toe in/toe out. That is where distance apart is finalized.
But yes, speakers can end up wider. They can also end up narrower.
