Bass traps -- they do help. I've got large ones (from ASC and GIK) in all four corners. They help reverb time more than frequency response, and the result is audible and beneficial. Less boom, more clarity, slightly smoother response.
Good job, building your own subs! I don't have much of a handy side, though I did once construct a passive sub with Madisound drivers and cabinet. It came out quite well.
