Not sure what you mean by "slow down" theft? If you want to "slow" him/her down a baseball bat to the knee would do it.
Joking aside (not really a joking matter
) My preferred method is a bio-metric/fast access safes in a few key areas around the house for handguns and a large safe for the long guns. Or you can always carry a handgun on yourself, even at home if that is an option.
