IanCG.......I agree with you that it is sometimes easier to detect what certain specific sound system tweaks contribute by removing them than when adding them. Once we become acclimated to a change in our system, reversing a change can be subtle, dramatic, or nonexistent. On the other hand, there are some additions to sound systems that are so impressive and positive that there would be no reason to remove them and lose the benefits. The exercises we go through to improve the quality of our sound system's performance is all part of the fun of being an audio enthusiast.
