Dave - from my brother: " they were made for the cpr. some were made which said 'canadian time services' as well, which were mostly for other canadian rr's. mine was made in 1891. it has an 1883 17 jewel movement of which apparently only a few more than a thousand were made. it is pendant set which was not allowed on usa rr's as they had to be lever set. some had 1892 movements which came in both 17 and 21 jewel movements. in the shape mine is in it's about a $1000 worth of watch."

My brother has about 40 watches in his collection at any one time. He probably buys & sells a half-dozen a year, as the mood strikes. He uses them all, in turn.
