Greg.......That's a broad brush you are painting with. There have been a number of reviews on the C1000P/T, with more than one reviewer stating the phono stages in the C1000 outperform many high dollar external phono preamps. That is not saying that there aren't some highly touted, well respected, and pricey external phono preamps available that some feel are the best of the best. Of course, this doesn't even take into consideration, as well respected as it is, that really serious vinyl playback goes way beyond Linn Sondek, and that's before a phono preamp or a cartridge are even selected.
