"Grow" is apt, Joe. One immediately apparent difference was the expansion of the perceived physical scale of a given performance, not least with large-ensemble program (orchestral, massed choral, "big" film scores, big band, opera). Venues "grew" larger, and so did instruments, which achieved a more realistic size from the standpoint of a listener seated in, say, Row L or M of a concert hall or closer up in a jazz club.
