JWH.......I thought the Penta's were smoother sounding than the stock tubes, but the Gold Lions were able to outperform them, primarily with a more robust low frequency range and a clearer midrange presentation. Naturally, these are my impressions and may not parallel yours.
Yes, McIntosh Labs moved their McIntosh branded tube vendor to JJ Tubes a couple years ago.
