With the Ultra SS' the recommended placement is with the hats up. I have the optional bases on them, so they can only go that way and frankly I did not spend too much time trying them without bases and with the hats down.

The main reason I got the optional bases is because I use the Ultra's in sets of 4 (5 under the amps), which requires a bit of leveling adjustment to ensure equal weight distribution. Unlike the Ultra SS', the Ultra 5's have no built-in leveling adjustment, and that is where the bases come handy.

What I can tell you is certainly worth experimenting with is the exact placement under the component: small shifts can make quite a difference. For this reason, I have not screwed them in place of the original feet.
