I believe that USB is using async transmission with the dac master clock, while coax uses the source component to clock the data synchronously.
Because of this, I believe it's (usually) preferred to use the USB input, as the dac clock is more precise.
I don't know what the lumin uses, so perhaps it is not an advantage to use USB, you should try it and see.
