After talking to two techs I've decided not to pursue the 12v option for the input tube. One guy thought it was possible but worried about noise. The other said that putting another transformer did carry a noise danger. On top of that he said that it looks like all of the heaters are being fed from a common supply and unloading the input tube could cause an over voltage on the output tubes. Both were going by the picture that Dennis included in the manual emailed to me.
So I decided not to risk screwing up this amp just for the sake of being able to try a few more tubes out. I have several combinations that I really like and will just stick with those going forward.
