I was living in Portland, Oregon, when I experienced a total eclipse of the sun on February 26, 1979. The event was very spectacular, and kind of eery at the same time. It was a bright clear Thursday morning in Portland with no cloud cover. The moon gradually crept across the face of the sun, and it began to turn to dusk outside, and finally darkness like midnight. The street lights all came on. It was very strange. My mother was in Florida, and I was talking to her on the telephone while she was watching it on network television. A total eclipse of the sun is quite an event to witness in a lifetime.

I felt the same thrill witnessing Mount St. Helens erupt on Sunday May 18, 1980. Totally awesome to see. Totally devestating to experience the results.
