I agree that your speakers should be first priority. I wouldn't even think about mods or electronics upgrades until your speakers are upgraded. A speaker's unique characteristics ("distortion" relative to the original signal) are orders of magnitude greater than any electronic component's character. Moreover, the mechanical parts of a speaker change (i.e., degrade relative design specifications) over time.
What are you thinking for your speaker upgrade?

I plan to go around some stores and listen to floorstanding speakers < $1000: B+W, KEF, Paradigm, Polk, and Wharfdale, and will consider Axiom. Any recommendations?
