Right. So when I was younger I lived near a huge music library and I was game for anything; obscure tribes from the remotest areas, Indian classical, the wildest steppes of Asia, you name it, all long gone with the TDK C90 cassette tapes. Africa probably has the most variety and takes the crown, but let's not forget your neighbors down south as well, and, indeed, anywhere else.
So taking a brief look we have King Sunny Ade; King of Juju, a soft voiced chap, Manu Dibango, quite effervescent, Salif Keita; the best of-the Golden Voice,( double CD), and from Guinea Balla et ses Balladins; The Syliphone years. Plus a double CD of Fela Kuti. The Rough guide to World Music should give you some pointers. Celia Cruz was great as well.
