The first time he does that would be very likely to scare him considerably...and he'd be unlikely to repeat that action. However, if he really goes for the volume control, you could try giving him a demo of what can happen turning the volume control and pair the action with a definite "No, no' no", holding your hands over your ears and a shake of your head. Kids learn quickly with love.
