There are a variety of changes that can occur based on use. Differences can be subtle all the way to a complete loss of resolve/veiling. Measuring with a meter doesn't help as resistors can measure fine but have degraded sound.

Dave used to change his regularly. I would suggest that you replace them every couple of years whether you think they need it or not. If you are using resistors that came with your speakers, be sure to rough up/clean the leads before installing them.
