Usually when there is a high and low setting, the high setting is better performing - as most of the time the low setting is just "padded" down - many times with a resistor - so the high setting has less between you and the music. I'm sure there are times when the high has an extra gain stage - although I would assume not that often - if the was the case- then the low setting would be better
