HMNZS Achilles played herself.
My 1st Supervisor at work, his brother-in-law was on the Achilles during the battle- I asked if he was scared (hey, I was only 18 at the time- and the Battle of the River Plate is a big thing in New Zealand with our ship the HMNZ Achilles being in the battle). He said during the battle -no, said he was deep in the engine room & all he heard during the hour-long battle was the rumble of guns!
Said he was sh*t scared after the battle when he came on deck & saw the damage & the real possibility that the Graf Spee would resume the battle against them, which he said that they would have had 'no chance' of surviving, with just them & HMS Ajax able to fight.
