Clipping protection effectively rounds off the sharp edges of the clipped waveform, reducing the likelihood of driver damage from the distortion. It does not completely eliminate the possibility though, and that's why you're better off using a higher powered amp if you are pushing your amp to its limit. An amp with adequate power for a given speaker load and desired volume level will be able to reproduce the waveform cleanly without producing these damaging distortion components.
