I have both, and there is no question the modded unit sounds better. I hear clearer, smoother vocals and get better resolution of individual instruments in orchestral works.
I am running a Mac MCD500 as a DAC. One of the big benefits of the modded unit is that its digital S-P/DIF output is transformer isolated from the rest of the circuitry, keeping a lot of noise out of the system.
