junker - I think you are asking about the 20.7s and the Pass Labs XA100.5s. You'll notice that I don't have a preamp to drive the amps - I do it directly with the K-03's built-in line stage.
This set up yields the lowest noise and the purest sound in my opinion and I find it very satisfying.
The K-03 line stage stage puts out enough voltage to drive the 20.7s to satisfying SPLs. The attenuator on the K-03 is usually set, depending on the recording, between -30dB and -10 dB. The loudest I listen to is 95dB SPL peak. When reproducing some orchestral climaxes the needles on the XA100.5s do move meaning that the amps went into class AB mode, but I can not tell when this happens from the sound coming out of speakers.
