Also, the turntable is outputting a very small signal, which the internal phono stage amplifies. I would think there will be a large mismatch in volume if using the line input rather than the phono input.

The Ref 5se has both balanced and single ended inputs. I believe they are all line level but there is one specifically marked phono. That is the one I use for my phono preamp. Originally I was using a Fosgate Signature phono stage that only has single ended outputs. I have now moved to a Ref Phono 2se that has both balanced and single ended outputs. I now go from the balanced outputs of the Ref Phono 2se into the balanced phono inputs of the Ref 5se.
