I'm not going to do an exhaustive review to find a DAC that cannot function as a preamp, i.e. be directly connected to a power amplifier but they are not very many. For example, the Vivaldi can, according to the OM, be directly connected to the power amplifier. The big knob on the front panel is a volume control. "Just a DAC" doesn't really exist anymore. Most DAC's function very well as pre's and if you don't do vinyl, in the Mac lineup the Vivaldi equivalent would be the D1100, which is what I own.

I'm sure that having made this statement, someone will list 15 current DAC's with no volume control.
