You should be able to control it with the one data cable. A second cable would still be required to enable remote turn on/off and yes these both use the same type of cables. Keep in mind that no audio signal is transmitted over these cables so you can use as cheap of cable as you like. I purchased mine from Amazon and found a blue braided cable that I thought looked nice and used those.
