I use them very sparingly, usually only when spinning some 1/4" reel tape at low volume I will add a touch of treble.
Any source I play at normal to upper volumes I disengage the tone controls.
If you have them use them if your ears tell you so, don't worry about what the magazines/reviewers might say, they have no clue who you are and your room acoustics, or the age of your ears.
