We use the SER, i.e. Shoe Equivalence Rule. It works like this. You buy a new preamp made from unattainium. You tell her it cost $100. Then you send her out to buy a $100 worth of shoes for herself.
P.S. Wives do not actually fall for this, but they appreciate the gesture.
