Perhaps the best application would be as surround speakers, attached to the wall
and then make use of its angles to have a wider response? Maybe the crossover
will have to updated to manage comb filtering better?

I think you misunderstand what Bose is actually trying to do in the 901. All those drivers are aimed at the wall. Only the single front driver fires into the room.
