I agree what's been said about using an external DAC, have had a separate unit now for about 2 1/2 years. It seems that DACs are improving at a rapid pace, but not so much with preamps, amps and speakers.
As for explaining to your "better half" how you shouldn't need to upgrade, ever, I won't touch that one!

Can you please share what's the difference between the gold lions and stock tubes? how much are they and the normal shelflife?
How do you know when it is time to change out the stock tubes?
