Just some thoughts, but either you got burned with a bad pressing, or your vinyl needs cleaning with an ultrasonic machine, or there's a cartridge alignment problem. I have both an original 1979 issue and the Kevin Gray/Steve Hoffman remaster on an RTI pressing, and they're both pretty quiet, especially the RTI.

Not sure of the pressing you purchased, but the U.S. WB vinyl has been reported to be very noisy.

I have the MFSL copy and it's as quiet as a mouse.

Thanks Tony, Bob -
as this is the only disc I have with this kind of noise, I suspect I got a bad pressing. It is a Warner Bothers pressing, not 180 gram, and is visually perfect. Would need to research which exact pressing I might have, but academic at this point.
I do clean all my disks, in a basic Spin-Clean set-up. So far, so good overall.

Might look into the MFSL release - still like the music!
