I've used Nikon for many years as well. Either brand can make just about any level of photographer happy. Canon seems to dominate a bit in their telephoto lens selection as witnessed by many pro photographers at sporting events. For your average photographer, either is great. I just happen to really like the color saturation and build quality of Canon L lenses. They are pretty pricey of course.
