Yes, it seems we have exactly the same problem, and, no, there is no way I would use paint thinner, either! I did try to clean it and it only made things worse. It's as if there is a film-type material that comes off with age and results in the sticky feeling. As you said, the sound is great, and the tweeter itself is unaffected,. so this seems to be merely a cosmetic problem, and it is not visible with the grilles on (which I prefer), but, still... these are $22K speakers!
