The GST, PST, HST etc. you guys have up there are an alphabet soup of confusion! We've got a bunch down here too, like sales taxes where the state charges a percent (something like 5% usually, in the states that charge it), and counties can then add their add-on to that (sorry for the two "adds" in the sentence, but even writing about it has me speaking bureaucratese!).
