I am a little late to the party but I just finished reading “Sapiens” by Yuval Noah Harari. He is an Oxford trained professor of history from Israel. It was originally published in 2011.
Among others, he attempts to answer the question of how Homo Sapiens moved from having no more significance on earth than jellyfish 70,000 years ago to being the masters of the earth. I found it captivating and thought provoking to a disturbing level.
Highly recommended.
