The D-300 is an excellent camera, and the 17-55 f2.8 lens is great as well. I have both and have been very happy with them. I got the D-700 to take advantage of its improved high-ISO performance (very low "noise" at ISO3200 & 6400) for available light shots. I'm still using the D-300 quite a bit for other situations and to take advantage of a fairly large number of DX lenses I have.
