I always look for the public radio stations, or the college stations. There is a college station near me that has a huge variety of music. I don't like all of it, but they run the whole spectrum from polkas to power cords, and everything in between,
There are still a few good stations out there, you just have to turn off your auto muting, stop hitting the auto scan buttons, and turn the tuning dial ( if you have one).

A good antenna is one of the keys to finding the weaker stations. Put it up as high as you can.
