Terry, very few of us that have hunted varmints for a long time would ever consider the 30-06 to be a 'varmint cartridge', for the obvious reasons. Today's modern VLD 6mm offerings in shorter bottle neck cartridges are the rage, great BC's , flat shooting and with exceptional range.

While 1000 + yards shots are common west of the Mississippi back here in the East most groundhogs are taken under 500 yards. I was blessed with an alfalfa field that allowed 1000 yard shots when I bagged mine @ 749 yards.
