I also tried them in first reflection area on each wall in place of my Acoustic Geometry panels and didn't care for that sound. I then tried many other areas, but ultimately found just using the two Aperture Panels centered on front wall and removing the Acoustic Geometry panels sounds best.
I had the good fortune to do six weeks worth of experimenting with different locations and numbers of Apertures. Imo, the best initial locations are often some combination of: a) centered between speakers, b) behind each speaker or c) both. Somewhat depends on the room and the other stuff in it. Like you, I found, removing non-Aperture panels can yield better results. I do have one on each side-wall first reflection point, but two on each side was one too many. The crowning touch came by adding three spaced across the wall behind the listening position; these pulled the soundstage forward without reducing its rearward depth.
