If the sub is semi-mobile (or you have many huge, strong friends), place the sub in the listening position where YOU will be sitting. Crawl around the room keeping your eaer height around the level of the center of the woofer as if the sub was on the floor.

Once you crawl around and find the spot that has the best sound - guess what - that is where your sub belongs.

Subs with active correction have come a long way to alleviate this process and can work nicely in many different locale's, but if you want the best placement - that is how to find it.
While this will show you a general area that could work, it does not take into account how the sub pressurizes the room. It may get you into the ballpark but not much more than that if you are looking for optimized integration, pressurization, and frequency response.

As for EQ, it's never as good as when you apply it after the sub is best positioned acoustically.
