I have both a Ref CD7 and a DAC8. The DAC in the CD7 is much better than the DAC8. Warmer and smoother. I have not really spent much time with the Ref CD9. The huge price increase over the CD8 turned me off. Also I like the idea of having a separate DAC for computer files. If price is an issue I would consider an earlier Ref CD7 or CD8 over the CD6. My guess is that the sound of the DAC section in the CD6 is very similar to my DAC8.
I am very happy with my Ref CD7 and have really felt no need to upgrade.
