We have started buying champagne regularly from large and small growers. Contrary to reputation, we find that its quality varies by price, with some higher value and some lower value vintages. I.e., I can virtually always tell the difference in a $20 bottle and a $40 bottle (including with blind tastings). Of course, I love the $20 bottle that delivers the flavor and experience of the $40 bottle - it’s the hunt that makes it fun.
