I follow the weight distribution and shape of the component or speaker plan; this is usually conveyed by how the OEM decided to place support feet (not so much location as count of footers) on the component or speaker myself. For example, on my TAD R1 Mk2 speakers, I utilize 3 as that was TAD's original design statement and happens to be the best matching shape whereas for my Cybershaft clock, I utilize 4, in that case, not exactly where the original footers are but where my testing indicated they sounded best.
