Are any modern cassette tape decks still made decent?
Are any modern cassette tape decks still made decent?
I don't necessarily want to buy a used problem and refurb, but I want something ok. $500-1000 would be ok. I'm not going to invest heavily into a dead format, but it would be nice to hear some old stuff, and new indie stuff on a different format. When I was a kid, cassettes were popular. |
The choice for new products is slim as far as I know.
Marantz professional makes a dual deck for about $150 and Tascam makes a couple at $500. Whether they compare in any way to older products is questionable. The Tascam looks more serious, but I've never heard one. edit-i forgot Teac makes versions of the Tascam units at almost half the price but I'm not sure of the tech differences. I just started getting. marketing emails from a new division of the web store partsconnexion that sells older stereo gear and there are a number of reasonably priced cassette decks, there, listed as refurbished and working. I think they come with a warranty of some kind, too. Check it out: https://www.partsconnexion.com/pcx-t...s-b-stock.html |
All the new decks use the same junk tape mech. Get a used deck that's been refurbed by a known good tech, not someone who changed a belt and calls it working.

Handel's L'Allegro il pensaroso ed il moderato first up, as you do. I wus in to Opera big time in them days, living in the very heart of London; Bloomsbury and Soho. The sq is a bit wavy, a note of harshness in the top end, and indeed some muffle with the very fine soprano, though that might be the speaker. It's great friends with a piercing tone also, and is getting a bit annoying now, the Proustian madelaine cookie is losing it's flavor. Cassette tapes always gave a full body to your beer, which is why they lasted so long.
