An afternoon with John Gannon OLED calibration

A few Saturdays ago I was at my wits end. I had just purchased a LG oled and a Marantz AV8802a . I was getting ghosting, blurring and an overall underwhelming picture. :tears: I went online, called a few dealers and finally got a few contact numbers. After talking with a few folks I settled on John. John came over that morning with his own blu ray player ( as my then player works when it wants to) . I guess I wasn't thinking but it was the same John Gannon who was with Stereophile, TAS and TPV. John first calibrated just by eye . He then busted out some disks with test patterns. He cleaned everything as far as the ghosting and blur and the adjusted my speakers. He didn't like how my rear speakers sounded(see signature below) so he re wired the polarity
and remounted them upside down. He then re ran Audessy . Everything sounds and looks great !

I never thought calibration would make a difference... I was under the impression that TVs are now great out of the box....boy was I wrong

Congrats Doug! The LG OLED is an awesome TV. Sorry to hear it had issues straight out of the box. I got lucky. Mine looks superb without any fussing around with settings.

I had to replace a bad Roku Ultra with an NVidia that seemed to help as well

Calibration makes all the difference in the world! It took me less than an hour to calibrate my latest TV to near perfect measurements, but over two weeks of tweaking before it looked right. It’s definitely worth the investment.

My manual does not include instructions on calibration. I am having ghosting issues as well, but it seems to be when we watch Direct TV.

I was very close to pulling the trigger on an OLED TV and now I'm wondering if I need to rethink that decision. :umm:

Plan on purchasing the LG 77” OLED in a couple of months.

I always use RTINGS.com to get me in the ballpark for calibration and TV reviews.

The same here. Not a lot of adjusting needed for my Sony 940D. They are very useful to decide which set to purchase.
