Just rolled a quad of these into my C1000. We have about 40 hours on them. Really enjoying the low end.

Has anyone compared Mullard EL34s to the stock Primaluna EL34s? If so, what differences do you hear? (The standard Mullard, not the obscenely expensive FX series!)
EDIT: Upscale Audio's site has the answer: "Other EL34's to consider are the rare and expensive SED Winged C which is very good sounding. The Mullard re-issue which wears like iron but maybe not as warm." I don't want to lose any warmth! (I already went through that with Gold Lion KT77s. I loved their clarity and presence for a while, but then I started missing the lusher midrange of the stock EL34s that came with my amp. The KTs would probably work better for rock or other electronic music--I mainly listen to classical and acoustic jazz.) |
Haven't heard the Mullard EL84 but have a pair of the re-issued Mullard El84s. They sound fairly good, not my favorite EL84 but a good solid tube with a clean, defined sound.
I concur with your perspective of the GL KT77. I like them a lot but they do lean toward clarity and imaging and away from warmth. My vintage USA Fat Boy 6CA7s are warmer. |
